Well it's been a very exciting 7 months in London and it got even better last weekend. Last Saturday, I flew to Milan for the Dolce and Gabbana party being held in honour of Justin Bieber at the amazing GOLD. To say that it was a surreal moment would be an understatement. We arrived at the party to the sound of screaming girls aka Bieber fans. Upon entering the gorgeous GOLD, we were immediately greeted by the sight of Justin Bieber, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana just casually chatting away. I have to admit...I was EXTREMELY excited at this point.

We danced, we drank champagne, we mingled and then the moment to end all moments happened - see the picture below.

This is definitely up there with the moment that I met Jimmy Choo last year at London Fashion Week.

Pretty in Paprika!

Okay so the Summer months are not yet with us but that is no reason to not start preparing for those warmer months. I'd been hearing a lot on Twitter about a brand of clothing called Paprika. As I am a bit of a clotheshorse, I thought I would investigate a little further. So I settled down with a glass of wine and a packet of Percy Pigs (my secret addiction) and decided to have a look through their website. All I can say is OMG! I am a very girly girl when it comes to my dress-sense. I do not own too many pairs of trousers or jeans as I am a lover of dresses and skirts, especially if they are floral. So you can imagine my delight, when I hit upon a website full of my favourite things. I managed to limit myself to two dresses - one Maxi and one Mini.

A few days ago, I got in from work and there they were, waiting for me. I literally tore the packet open only to find they has been wrapped in beautiful pink paper (my favourite colour) - what a lovely touch and something only added to my excitement. Once the paper had been opened (or ripped excitedly in my case), what was revealed immediately made me think of warmer months, over-sized sunglasses and fabulous sandals. Two gorgeous dresses...

As I have always been a fan of Maxi dresses, I tried that one on first - perfect fit. Then the second dress - also a perfect fit. I was pretty in Praprika and was positively loving it. What was even better was the price - so reasonable (especially good as January is always a hard month). So not only was I pretty in Paprika but they came at pretty price.

The Paprika website launched earlier this week and will no doubt receive many other orders (in fact I would not be surprised if they were selling out). STYLISA interviews Gok Wan – A Truly ‘Stylish’ Gentleman

When I received the email inviting me to the Specsavers Spectacle Wearer of the Year Awards, I was beyond excited. Here I am, only having been in London for 9 weeks, and I have already done so much. When I came to the point in the email where I was told there was an opportunity to interview Gok Wan, I had to read it a few times – I thought someone was teasing me. Fast forward one week and there I was on my way to The Rembrandt Hotel, to interview the man himself.

I have always been a huge fan of Gok Wan – he seems very real and has helped to give women all over the country the confidence to love their bodies and believe in themselves which is a feat that not many people can achieve. Women respond very positively to him and after meeting him in the flesh and spending some time with him, he surpassed my expectations. He was warm, friendly and made me feel completely at ease – he is not only stylish but a true gentleman. I hope you enjoying reading the interview as much as I enjoyed conducting it.

Firstly, are you excited to be presenting the Specsaver Awards?

Yes I can’t wait. We always have lots of fun with the celebrities and the best thing about the awards is that they are in support of a charity very close to my heart. Kidscape is an anti-bullying charity, dedicated to preventing bullying and child abuse and is fully committed to keeping children safe from harm. All of the proceeds from the ticket sales and the silent auction will go directly to them, which is fantastic.

What are your top three tips when it comes to choosing the perfect pair of specs?

Firstly make sure your glasses go with the look that you have committed to for the season.

Secondly, it is imperative that they suit your face shape.

And finally, make sure you feel confident in them and if you are only going to have one pair, make sure that they take you from your desk to the dance floor. If not, have two pairs, one for day and one for night.

For a lot of women you are much more than a stylist, you are someone who gives them confidence to be themselves. Who gives you the confidence to be your fabulous self?

The things that give me confidence are my job, my friends and my family. And although this might sound cheesy, I have to say the fans also give me a great deal of confidence. They have been amazingly supportive and really bought into what I do. Without them, I would not be able to do what I’ve done. Furthermore, I love my job and I love working with the girls – they are all fantastic.

How do you feel about social media and the fact that it has become one of the latest trends in the world of fashion?

I think that it is great! Twitter, Facebook and social media in general are the future. From a fashion point of view, it gives consumers and fans instant access to not only the brands but pieces from their collections, that years ago, you would have had to wait a considerable amount of time for. I particularly love what a lot of the big designers are doing now in terms of streaming videos of their catwalk shows. Everyone can now be a part of events like fashion week, which has never been done before. So yes, I support it fully.

I was delighted when Donna, the lady behind the brand Donna Ida agreed to be interviewed. I first connected with the lovely lady on Twitter as I am a big fan of designer denim. One of the things that really stands out about Donna is the fact that she loves what she does and you get a real sense of that from her tweets (and this interview confirms it). She is simply, dedicated to denim...

Firstly, tell us how your fashion career began?

It all started in 2006 when I opened our first shop. That was literally the beginning – before 2006 I was just a very keen shopper.

Tell us about the Donna Ida brand and what inspired you to start it?

I have always loved denim but was frustrated that there was nowhere to shop all the best denim labels in one place. Department stores were the only answer and I couldn’t get the help I needed. I decided to open a shop that just sold jeans – it was such a simple concept when I told people what I was doing they all said what an obvious and simple idea – so strange that no one’s done it before!

What have been the highlights of your fashion career to date?

Being nominated for the Drapers Awards twice – the next Awards is on the 17^th of November! Building a strong customer base of loyal customers and working with a team of amazing girls who all believe in the business as much as I do.

Describe the typical Donna Ida customer – what is she like?

We have such a broad range as we are very specialist but there is a very core customer group who is 25-60, knows exactly what look she is going for, what her body shape is, what she wants to wear for the season.

Who are you favourite fashion designers?

It varies from season to season but there is a look I admire – I love the 70’s, flares, anything high-waisted. I prefer a more sophisticated silhouette so love references to Dior’s New Look, I like YSL and Louis Vuitton. I generally prefer French designers so Isabel Marant is on my radar but also like the older American designers who are constantly referenced now such as Roy Halston and Oscar de la Renta.

What is your definition of style?

Knowing what looks good on you and wearing it well. I think we should all work with what we’ve been given – confidence is key.

Who are your style icons?

I love the old images of Marilyn Monroe and Bridget Bardot, women who were beautiful and glamorous. I like the 60’s when Jackie Kennedy was the First Lady and the glamour of the South of France. There’s still something special about the South of France now – it’s kept that glamour and Monaco always feels like an event. For modern day icons I love Diane Kruger, Cate Blanchett and Rachel Zoe. Women who are all comfortable in their own skin and are confident and successful.

Do you have a personal favourite, when it comes to denim brands?

That would be like choosing between my children! I have a few favourites, or brands that work for me.
J Brand, Earnest Sewn, James Jeans, Goldsign and Current/Elliott.

Has the world of social media had an impact on your brand?

Definitely, it’s such a great way to connect with new customers and also our peers. I find that I chat to so many other retailers and everyone supports each other. Twitter has been great in that way – it feels like a casual friendly way to connect. You can tweet literally anyone you want.

Do you have any exciting projects/collaborations planned for the brand?

Oh soooo many!! We have a new shop opening in Guildford at the end of next month and are looking at new locations all the time. We have an exciting new website launching early next year and we have a few other collaborations on the boil with designers.

What advice would you give to aspiring fashion entrepreneurs?

‘Find a job you love and you’ll never work a day in your life’ is a wise old quote. I work long hours but it’s not ‘work’ to me – I love it. If you love fashion and people just get in there – don’t put it off. You really can make anything happen if you believe in it enough.

Couture in the 21st Century

As a lover of couture, I was delighted to be at the launch of ‘Couture in the 21^st Century’ – a collaboration between Harrods Publishing and world renowned photographer Rankin. The book consists of a number of interviews with well known designers like Armani, Roland Mouret and Oscar de la Renta, talking about their relationship with couture. Up and coming designers such as Erdem and Hannah Marshall are also featured in the book, which is a must-have for anyone who has an interest in or love of couture. The book itself, is absolutely beautiful, with an intricate cover, that actually looks like is has been designed by a couturier.

The event was very well attended, and it was great to see designers like Antonio Berardi, Roland Mouret, Hannah Marshall, and Stephen Jones, mingling with up and coming fashion bloggers, which is a new and interesting direction for Harrods. Fashion and Beauty Director, was also in attendance, as was Deborah Bee, Author and Editor-in-Chief of Harrods Publishing.

For me, the book is a delightful insight into the world of couture. Personally, I was introduced to this wonderful world many years ago by my mother, who is a lover of all things Chanel and Armani. Reading the book brought back memories of her beautiful wardrobe and her exquisite attention to detail. It also reminded me that true lovers of couture have a very special relationship with it that goes way beyond the realms of mere fashion. For me, couture is art and when applied to the body, it becomes art in motion. A truly magical experience, that stays with you for a lifetime and leaves a stylish imprint on the soul.

For anyone out there, who wishes to indulge their senses in couture, then this book is a must-have.

At last, it is the return of our guest blogger feature, Style in Your City. Today we are delighted to be featuring the fabulous Rachael Lechliter from Red Rover Style:

Greetings everyone, my name is Rachael and I am one of the founders of Red Rover Style, an online magazine about lifestyle and charity. We are based in NYC. Our magazine has about 20+ writers, whom we call Rovers. As you can imagine, managing over 20+ writers can be a handful, but very colorful. I even contribute to the magazine as the Social and Savvy Entrepreneur rover. Also, my Red Rover Style partner, Elena Baxter and I , founded an online PR firm called Red Rover Public Relations. We call it our empire, but luckily the two platforms work hand-in-hand with each other.

So now that you know a little background on my entrepreneur world, I want to share my personal fashion with you as a social and savvy entrepreneur in NYC.

First, my number one fashion dedication is to my hair, and that is probably because I grew up in my mother’s salon, and more or less, I am obsessed with hair.

I have experimented with every color from black, medium brown, auburn, blonde, Heidi Klum platinum blonde to fiery copper red, Jennifer Aniston’s golden locks, and back to brown, back to blonde, well, I’ve done it all with different types of highlight placements and trend-haircuts in between.

Today, I think I’ve nailed down my look with red, which is really a rich auburn color. I think it brings out the green tinting in my eyes…Of course, I’m not just one color, I have some fiery copper peekaboo highlights too.

Now that I’ve fulfilled my impulsive obsession to talk about hair, I want to talk about style here in NYC as the fall weather is upon us! It’s crisp, cool, and all I can think about is pulling out my boots and fall suit jackets. BUT, Since, I’m jumping around NYC from one meeting to the next, I need to go from flats to heels and turn my office day style to suit an evening with cocktails, dim-lighting and networking. Don’t forget, since my office is mobile, I need to lug around a laptop, charger, make-up, and I even carry around my SLR camera, hence is why I need flats.

So here it is, my most desired look for a social and savvy entrepreneur going from a September office day to a September cocktail party.

My day look screams sophistication and comfort. I adore these colors because they go perfect with fall and my hair color. Oh, since NYC can get pretty windy, this dress will keep me feeling secure as I know it be blowing all over the place…

My evening look screams passion and edgy style. To be honest, I’m a bit shy when it comes to slipping on a pair of leopard heels, but I’ve paired them with classy jewelry and so my look here is balanced.

Lisa’s Lush Lashes

Today was an interesting day for a number of reasons, but the main reason was that one of my beauty prayers has been answered. As much as I am happy in my own skin, there is one little thing that has always bothered me…my eyelashes. I have always felt that they do not look as long or as thick as they should. Well the eyelash gods (who go by the names of Marci and Elke) have given me a solution to that problem.

Now normally I am a little sceptical about products that claim that they can change the way you look in one form or another. But I had to humbly eat my words today when I was introduced to the wonder that is M2 LASHES. This revolutionary product comes in two forms, EYELASH ACTIVATING SERUM and EYELASH REVITALIZING GLOSS.

The serum increases the length, thickness and strength of your lashes. It is a combination of nutritional and active ingredients, one of which is used in ophthalmology (the branch of medicine concerned with the eye and its diseases). It must be applied every evening, once the eye area has been thoroughly cleansed, to the base of the upper eyelids’ lash line (a brush applicator is provided).

Visible results are supposed to appear between six and eight weeks – maximum results are achieved by week 16. So guess what I’ll be doing tonight…yes that’s right, applying my serum before bedtime. The excitement at the prospect of lovelier, longer, luxurious lashes is seriously overwhelming.

The gloss works in unison with the serum to the growth, give lashes definition and a healthy shine. It is very easy to use (a definite plus for me), and is to be applied morning and evening (from the base of the eyelash to the tip). What’s even better is that the effects are immediate. And just so you know ladies (and maybe gentlemen too), this is to be applied before you apply your regular mascara.

To prove that it works, I have decided that I will take weekly pics of my eyelashes, which I will post onto my blog, so you can see the effects. I feel like a scientist in my lab conducting research…my sister (who is an ‘actual’ scientist - I have included the 'science-bit' for you below, Louise) would be so proud.

Wonderbra...Full Effect?

Shakira hit the nail on the head when she sang ‘Lucky that my breasts are small and humble so you don’t confuse them with mountains’...cue every woman with a modest clevage singing ‘Whenever, Wherever’ on karaoke night. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a total advocate of small and humble...but every once in a while (usually a Friday or Saturday night) I’m in the mood for mountains, or at least decent sized hills! Now since neither brain nor budget will allow for plastic surgery, I usually go down the padded bra/chicken fillets route instead but with limited to non-existent success.

So, given my previous forays into the perilous waters of bust enhancement, I unwrapped the new Wonderbra Full Effect with measured scepticism. First thoughts; it certainly looks a little less threatening than other padded bras I've tried, and the fact that it's seamless means it won't show through my clothes...so far so good.

Now to try it on! It really is incredible lightweight and after a few minutes of wearing it, I almost forget it’s there, that is until I look in the mirror...the difference is incredible! Not only have I gone up about 2 cup sizes in the blink of eye, but also you’d be hard pushed to guess that my new found ample bosom isn’t completely God given.

Now the scientist in me just couldn’t resist the urge to try and deconstruct this magical creation to see how such a natural look is a achieved. Turns out that the padding is made of a rather clever mix of foam, gel and air...no wonder it’s so light, weighing in at a meagre 80 grams, and the novel fan shape of the padding is responsible for giving that ‘enhanced from every angle’ look.

Since I’m a huge fan of the racer back vest, the multiway straps will come in very handy. Overall it’s incredibly comfortable, it will definitely give a natural looking ‘oomph’ to any outfit and gets 10/10 from me. Now all I need to do is take it out for a test drive on the town...I think my karaoke tune for tonight will be Shania Twain ‘Man...I Feel Like A Woman!

Well, I have now been in London for just over two weeks, and the excitement just grows and grows…and grows. I knew that London was going to be fun, but I did not know that it was going to be THIS MUCH FUN. And the best thing about it is that the fun is centred around my work in fashion, which is just the icing on the cake.

Anyway, back to the subject of fashion. Yesterday saw the start of London Fashion Week (in my world, it is more commonly known as HAUTE HEAVEN WEEK). Due to my hectic schedule (and plan for world domination via my work as a social media stylist), I was unable to make it to all the shows I was supposed to attend yesterday (so sorry guys). However, one show that I did manage to get to was Once Upon A Time, in aid of Hauser Bears. I got there early, which with the benefit of hindsight was good thinking, because by the time the show came to start, every seat in the house was taken. Fabulous fashion blogger Leroy Dawkins (Twitter name @Clotheshorse90) arrived just in time for the start of the show, and we finally got to meet and chat after months of Twitter conversations…love it. I was also thrilled to meet the lovely Tawi Jenyo from Stitching the Gap.

And then it was lights down, catwalk, action. David & Goliath who designed the Hauser Bears t-shirts came down the catwalk first. Very quirky, cool and in aid of a good cause, so I will definitely be making an investment.

Next came NICHOLE de CARLE, whose lingerie was both beautiful and risqué. Every girl who came down the catwalk looked amazing and what was great was the fact that the models looked healthy, rather than the usual skinny minnies.

Whilst I was watching this particular part of the show, a familiar face came and sat on the front row. Monsieur Dawkins later informed me that it was none other than Adam Ant, who I must say had an air of Johnny Depp about him and was wearing a fabulous kilt…the reason behind his outfit was soon to become clear.

At the end of the lingerie fest, all the girls came out…topless! However, they did have their hands strategically placed over their chests, which looked great and was the perfect way to end this part of the show. The designer then came out and took a bow, and in the words of Jay-Z, it was onto the next one.

Next came the English Kilt Company, which I loved…not only because the kilts were amazing in terms of design and quality, but the fact that two of the male models came out topless (and carried it off rather well). I became so engrossed in my appreciation for their ‘look’ that I forgot to take pictures…sorry girls. For me, they epitomised British fashion perfectly: stylish, quality, eccentric…I loved it. And to top it off, Adam Ant appeared in his fab kilt, to massive cheers from the audience…very cool indeed!

And now for my favourite part of the show…LOULOU BONTEMPS. Firstly, I would like to congratulate Loulou and the designers for putting together a show that was the epitome of collaboration and was totally in-keeping with the theme of the show overall. However I would like to reserve some of the congratulations for Loulou herself. My reason for this is that I have been with Loulou (helping to style the outfits), whilst she has been organising the whole show, so I have seen first-hand what went into creating this particular segment of the show.

You would not believe the amount of work (and stress) that goes into putting together something that is literally, over in minutes. To say she has worked hard, would be an understatement…and all of this has been achieved without the use of a mobile phone…quite a feat in this day and age of technology. The clothes were designed by Peyrovi, Briar Rose, Murrin, and Sally Pang. The accessories were created by Loulou, Still Remains, and Gemma Dane, and Elmstone. Everything came together perfectly and the overall look was very wearable (which is not something you can often say about a catwalk collection).

Finally came, Florian Jayet, whose collection brought one word to mind…armour. Once again, the pieces that came down the catwalk were very wearable and were in the classic colours black and white. The structure and attention to detail was fantastic and each of the outfits looked as though they had been specially made to fit each model. I also felt there was something artistic (almost graphically-inspired) about this collection. There was minimalism injected with intricate attention to detail which I loved. I would happily wear these pieces exactly as they are, direct from the catwalk.

Following on from the show, there was a fantastic after-party. Everyone was mingling and networking, and generally enjoying themselves, which is always nice to see. And then came the moment that I will remember for the rest of my life…meeting Jimmy Choo. I overheard someone saying that he had arrived. Everyone who knows STYLISA, knows how much STYLISA LOVES Jimmy Choo. When I eventually found him, he was lovely, easy to talk to and very polite. When I asked for a photograph, he was only too happy to say yes to my request. I will treasure that picture and the moment forever. I also managed to chat to Gail Porter after the show, who was simply delightful.

Day 2 in the Big Brother...sorry I meant to say in the Big City of London (and just to clarify, I am NOT a Big Brother fan), and I already feel like I have been here my whole life! I miss my family and friends terribly, but I am exceedingly happy to be living my fashion dreams.

Today saw me venture into the Haute Heaven that is Harrods, for The Perfume Diaries, which is a wonderful exhibition celebrating the history of perfume. It takes you on a fascinating journey, made even more interesting by the enchanting Roja Dove, who is the worlds only Professeur de Parfums. Monsieur Dove talked us through the whole exhibition, providing us with some amazing and unique insights into this intricate subject. What made the exhibition even more delightful, was the numerous rare pieces that had been sourced to sit alongside all the beautiful bottles of perfume. Being a 1950's fashion enthusiast, my favourite piece was this beautiful Dior dress. I would be happy to have it donated to my personal collection of vintage dresses...come on, I can dream can't I???

It was also great to see fellow bloggers at the event. I spent some time chatting to the lovely London Beauty Queen (Twitter name @LBQBlog) who certainly knows her stuff when it comes to the world of beauty. And I must say that I am very impressed by the fact that an institution such as Harrods, which is steeped in tradition, is sitting up and taking notice of the power and influence of the blogger. As Roja rightly pointed out, the internet has turned everyone into an expert, and consumers now want to make decisions for themselves, rather than being told or dictated to. This is definitely something that more brands need to take on board.

Personally speaking, there is only one perfume for me, which is Chanel No 5, a fragrance that transcends time and is extremely distinctive...a bit like me.

Well I have finally done it folks…I am taking the plunge and heading to the fashion capital of the UK…LONDON baby! I have finally managed to get that elusive ‘lucky break’ and I am on my way…into the unknown. This could be the making of me or the breaking of me…who knows! But one thing is for sure, exciting and interesting times lie ahead.

It’s been seven years since I set out on my fashion journey and it’s been a long, hard and very interesting road. I have made many sacrifices and encountered a great deal of negativity from people who told me I would never make it. I’ve been at the point where I have wanted to give up, and join the 9 to 5 drill that countless people set out on everyday. But I never gave up, I kept going, despite the setbacks, knock-backs and numerous opportunities that seemed to have leverage but turned out to be nothing but disappointments.

You might be sitting there asking yourself why I am writing this on my blog??? Well the answer is very simple. My sacrifices, tears and hard work are starting to pay off. I never gave up, even when I was down to my last fiver and neither should anyone reading this. I have loved fashion from the age of five, and I was determined to work in the industry despite the hurdles that I knew I would face. I have now been given an opportunity that could set me on my path to greatness and what’s even better, is that I have had some fantastic support along the way, from some truly amazing people who I am blessed to have in my life. There are far too many people to name here, but you know who you are and to all of you, I wish to say thank you from the bottom of my heart. Words could never express my gratitude and love for all the people who have supported me on this journey and who will no doubt, continue to support me. I only hope that I can offer you the same kindness, generosity and support that you have all shown to me.

However, there is one person whom I would like to mention and that is my mum, who over the years, has made many sacrifices for both myself and my sister. I would not be sitting on this train to London without her and could never thank her enough. So if you ever read this mum (she has a serious phobia of anything remotely technical), all I can say is…I love you…and thank you.

Fun is everything in Tokyo!

Above everything else, fashion in Tokyo is about having fun. Life in Japan, especially in such a big city, can be very busy and stressful, and Japanese tend to work long hours, with short holidays if they are on the corporate ladder. It is thought that Japanese students don’t study hard, but many of them are busy not only with study, but working part-time jobs too, to help pay for their school fees. Where as young people in the Western Europe might associate growing up with increased freedom, and therefore something to be desired, in Japan growing up is associated with more work and responsibility, and therefore young people desire to stay kids as long as possible, and they want to maintain their youthful looks. For this reason, rather than trying to be glamorous, Japanese girls would rather look cute. They also have feelings of affection for their school uniforms, which represent the fun of their school days.

Most Japanese girls dye their hair and many boys do too. Long flowing hair is popular this year, and hair extensions are common. Relatively long and spiky hair is popular with young men, and they style their hair after the most popular musicians. Men’s accessories are very important, too. High heels are popular, especially with shorter girls, and they seem happy to wear them all day. Students accessorize everything from their bags, to phones to pencil cases. A fan is a useful accessory in the hot weather, and you can brighten up your room or garden with a wind charm, from the wind charm stall.

Summer trends!

It's all about stripes and florals...

This year there seem to be two popular trends in summer fashion. One trend comes from images of the sea, and this is evidenced in navy blue and white, or black and white horizontally striped T-shirts and tops. “Border prints”. This is the simpler and more casual style. It is often paired up with Converse shoes.

Mini-Me Floral Fashion

The other style that is really popular at the moment is rather a romantic one. There are floral prints on dresses, skirts, play suits and even on frilly shorts. Skirts are of all lengths, maxi to mini, and tiers, lace and frills on the edges are common. Pastel colours appear to be the most popular, but all colours are seen, and there does not seem to be one colour which is representative of the trend. Frills on shorts are in lace as well as in floral patterns.

Cool as cucumbers! Wa-fashions

Pastel Parasols & Kool Kimonos

Japanese styles for the summer change slower than Western fashions, but the craze for black parasols appears to be over. Pastel colours are always popular, as are lace and gauzy and loosely woven fabrics. Images of the sea, and water, and small summer flowers are the summer staples, and kimono wearers perfect the art of looking cool, with several layers of clothing on. Linen and indigo are seen as especially cool for the summer. Polka dots are seen in both Japanese and Western styles this year.

I have avoided some of the more radical and strange street styles of the extremists and concentrated on the everyday! Enjoy the fun fashion looks of Tokyo this summer!

The lovely lady herself was kind enough to take time out of her busy schedule to chat to Lisa Maynard-Atem.

Firstly, what inspired you to start your blog?

Probably Susie Bubble's blog. I really liked the idea of an online diary-type journal where I could share all my fashion findings and empty my head of information, opinions, pictures and general ramblings. I felt I had something unique to offer - a unique perspective.

Were you surprised at the reaction that your blog has received?

Yes and no. I think a lot of the blogs that started around the same time (three years ago) have received similar recognition because in the UK at that time there were only a handful of them. Any blog that has been going for three years and is still plugging away deserves to get noticed - it's bloody hard work!

Why do you think the bloggers have become so prominent in the world of fashion?

Lots of reasons. People like to get an opinion from someone just like them, someone they can relate to rather than just the 'experts'. Apparently, people trust opinion from fellow consumers as opposed to people who have been paid to write what they write. Also I think online fashion and blogging goes hand in hand, it's easy to source pictures and add links, the resources are there. Blogging is also currently fashionable so it's still getting lots of attention. The fashion industry likes newness and blogs are still quite new so the love is still there. What I particularly like is that blogs are changing the way people look at fashion. Street style blogs have had an incredible effect on helping people experiment with fashion and define their style. And I like how there is no age barrier in fashion blogging. No-one cares.

What in your opinion, makes a good fashion blog?

I like a blog that is updated regularly and has a specific voice. It's hard to stick to *your* thing and very easy to unwittingly copy other bloggers. I notice it a lot on Twitter actually, everyone lapses into a particular tone.

Do you have any favourite fashion blogs?

Loads. I like Coco's Tea Party as she has a great eye for celebrity style. (I don't care for celebrities but I need to know what they're wearing for work.) Garance Dore is a very beautiful blog mixing illustration, writing, photography and even video. The Business of Fashion is brilliant for news. For pure eye candy I like Jackyblue.

What is your definition of style?

I think it's something that's unique to you. When what you wear has a meaning to you rather than wearing clothes because they're 'in fashion'.

Who are your style icons?
I like men as style icons. Robert Rauschenberg, David Hockney, Andy Warhol. They kind of have one look each and that's it, I quite like that discipline. Otherwise Sofia Coppola and Alexa Chung have lovely taste.

What advice would you give to aspiring fashion bloggers?

Don't start a blog unless you have something to say!

We were lucky enough to get five minutes with the lovely Jessica Lowe, who is the Press and Marketing Manager at Harvey Nichols in Manchester...

What is your role at Harvey Nichols Manchester?
I am the Press and Marketing Manager. It is my job to think of different ways to entice new and existing customers into the store whether it be through communication about products and promotions in the local press, social media, e-newsletters or our website, arranging fabulous events for our customers or working to bring some Harvey Nichols Magic to external events, especially the charity events that we support. In summary it is my job to spread the Harvey Nichols word!

How did you get into the world of luxury fashion?
I've always had an interest in fashion, even from an early age. In fact when I was eight years old I came second in a competition to design a new outfit for Barbie. I was on the Clothes Show, and even got the opportunity to meet Jeff Banks. Whilst I studied English at the University of Manchester, I worked for Topshop and was quickly promoted to being a Style Advisor. I also used my fashion knowledge to write for the student paper and decided to pursue a career in fashion journalism. I spent two years as the fashion Editor at legendary Magazine (in its original incarnation) City Life, which was a great experience. Manchester has such a great retail mix from the boutiques of the Northern Quarter to world renowned brands like Harvey Nichols and I got paid to write about it every week. I freelanced for a number of local magazines and I have written for Vogue.com. My role at City life led to a number of freelance positions working with Urbis on the Little Black Dress exhibition, taking a group of home-grown designers on a selling expedition to Barcelona for the Northwest Textiles Network, as well as styling shoots and arranging fashion shows. Then I saw the job at Harvey Nichols and it had everything I wanted, not to mention the beautiful clothes and gorgeous beauty products and scrumptious food I get to work with every day!

What is an average day with the press and marketing office?
There is no such thing as an average day in the Press and Marketing office. One day can involve brainstorming ideas with the store management team on events, and the next day I could be running around like a loon on fashion show day, making sure the models get to hair and make-up on time, or it could just be as simple as updating our website or twitter with fabulous new products.

What are the highlights of the job?
Well the obvious perks are getting to work with, try on and sometimes buy (at a discount!) very beautiful and expensive clothes. We also have some incredible beauty brands and I get treated to lovely facials and get to try out revolutionary new products. But I think that the main thing that has stopped me from straying from the job over the last four years is the amazing feeling you get when you pull off a really fantastic event. Especially when I get up the next morning, and see our event on the cover of the Manchester Evening News and hear nothing but great things from our customers.

And the challenges???
Working alone on a lot of projects can be tough, as can the long hours. But it's all worth it!

Do you have a favourite designer?
I have several, and it can often change from season to season depending on the collection, but winners for me include; Marc Jacobs, whose collections are always fun, youthful and very wearable; I also adore Lanvin dresses, I love the beautiful fabrics and interesting cuts but the fact that they are slightly roughly finished just suits my personality perfectly, I don't do too polished; and Miu Miu accessories are always at the top of my wish list.

When dressing for work, do you wear purely designer clothing or do you mix your designer with high street labels?
I tend to buy what I like, regardless of the label (price permitting of course!). I like things that are unique or that I can style in a slightly different way. Fashion should be descriptive not prescriptive, I hate it when magazines tell us what we 'should be wearing this season'. Clothes should express who we are or what we feel on that particular day!

What do you believe true style is?
I think that style is the ability to translate your personality through the way you dress. If you get this right, your clothes will always suit you. You can spot it a mile away when someone isn't comfortable in what they're wearing no matter how 'This Season' it is.

What is your top tip for spring/summer fashion?
Summer is the time to be girlie! Get our your prettiest prints and floatiest frocks and you can guarantee the weather will feel fine even if the sun doesn't have its hat on!

Finally, what advice would you give to anyone who wants to get into the world of fashion retail?
Know the business as a whole, it's an ever changing industry so always be aware of you customers, your competition and product. It's not enough to just love clothes... but it does help!

We were lucky enough to get the chance to interview Stewart Parvin, one of Britain’s most critically-acclaimed bridal designers, awarded a Royal Warrant of Appointment to Her Majesty The Queen in 2007.

How did your fashion career begin?

From the age of 4 I knew the difference between Chanel and Yves Saint Laurent, and used to advise my mother on what to wear. After graduating from Edinburgh College of Art. I went onto work for the fabuluous London couturier Donald Campbell, and then I moved to be senior evening wear designer for a large manufacturer designing many difference collections – however the world of couture was where I longed to be, and that led me to start up my own label.

When did you launch your first collection and what was the inspiration behind it?

I launched my first collection in 1995 with the opening of my own shop in Motcomb Street, it was a fusion of nautical stripes and gilt buttons, and summer garden party florals with crisp tailoring. Very Audrey / Jackie O!

How did you come to be the Queens official dressmaker?

Prior to the golden jubilee I was approached by Angela Kelly the Queens senior dresser who was looking for a fresher lighter more contemporary approach to the wardrobe of Her Majesty. First of all I submitted sketches and swatches, of which she chose 5 outfits including her famous pale blue cobweb lace dress which has been seen on many occasions and featured in the Buckingham Palace exhibition.

What have been the highlights of your career to date?

The night the queen wore the blue cobweb dress was the first time she’d worn one of my outfits and it received huge international attention as the lights went out and she descended the staircase in candlelight. More recently showing my 2011 collection at the White Gallery in a catwalk show was very exciting – the venue was the stunning Saatchi Gallery, and it was fantastic to be able to showcase the collection in such a prestigious venue.

Is there a typical Stewart Parvin client or do they vary?

there isn’t a typical stewart Parvin client, but the one thing they all do have in common is confidence, sophistication and an understanding of beautifully fitting clothes.

Can you tell us about you Autumn/Winter 2010 collection?

AW2010 will bring an exciting mix of crisp suits in metallic glitter tweeds, sharp pant suits in muted flannels, and sparkling evening gowns embellished with swarovski crystals.

Who are your favourite designers?

My favourite designers are Valentino for his glamour, Givenchy for his chic, and Oscar De La Renta for his park avenue style.

Is there anyone that you would like to dress?

Queen Rania of Jordan, Carey Mulligan and Reece Witherspoon would be top of my list as they not only possess great beauty but they have great individual style

You have recentlty relaunched the Stewart Parvin website - do you have any other plans to expand the brand?

Our boutique is about to close for a major refurbishment which will be hugely exciting, there are more exciting developments on the website and we’re just planning to show the bridal collection in New York to re-establish our US presence.

Have you embraced the phenomenon that is social media yet?

With the development of our website we will soon be starting a blog – which will provide a more interactive experience for visitors to the website.

What in your opinion is the essence of true style?

The essence of true style is individuality and self confidence – combined with an intimate knowledge of fashion trends, and knowing when to embrace them or to stay well clear!

And finally, what advice would you give to up and coming designers?

Prepare to be truly dedicated, even more be prepared for a long hard slog!!

It’s Credit Crunch Couture time again…

This piece is fabulous because it combines two of the trends of the season, playsuits and harem pants. And as the days finally getting warmer, this is a great choice of outfit. The artistic ‘statement’ print is beautiful and the rouching and drawstring finishes are perfectly girly. If you wanted to break up the print, you could team with a nice brown waist-belt and some fab wedges. If I had to choose a celeb to dress in this piece, it would be the gorgeous Kylie Minogue. I could just see the pint-sized princess in this little number, accessorised with her just as gorgeous boyfriend. Maybe if Carrie Bradshw decides to go back to Abu Dhabi, she could pack this jumpsuit in her suitcase, as it is very much her style.

As a big boob girl, finding a strapless bra, that does what it says on the tin, is like searching for the Holy Grail. I love bandeau, one shoulder and other interesting necklines, but the support offered by lowly strapless bras, with a crazy magnetic attraction to my waist, has always prevented me from fully indulging in my love of these styles.

Actually, I didn't really care that much about the feel at this point because, you know I'm brave, if not a little vain, and I am fully prepared to suffer for my style. I noticed that there were a few lovely Wonderbra ladies tweeting their way through Twitter, and I decided to get in touch. I spoke to (well tweeted with) a lovely lady called Sarah (Twitter name: @Wonderbra_Sarah), who recommended the Ultimate strapless bra for me.

So I raced, to the nearest department store and by some kind of miracle, there, in a small collection of Ultimate Wonderbras was lurking MY SIZE, which I often struggle to find (I am a 30E and I rarely come across it). Furthermore there was 20% off...I felt like the universe was trying to tell me something!

I did have a bit of a fight with it in the fitting room. And it did feel a bit weird at first. But after being informed that it was a perfect fit, I snapped it up and skipped all the way home.

Now there is a technique that I have found to guarantee the performance of this bra, but you do need a helper. By nature, these bras are fairly tight, and so a little tricky to get on and get in the right position. This is where a helper comes in handy. Once you've got it on, just get the chosen lucky person to yank it up a bit at the back and then it sits lovely and flat under the bust.

Now don't get me wrong. It is not the prettiest thing in the world (especially in nude). But this bra is not about looking sexy out of your dress, it's about looking sexy in it.

I am pleased to report that the bra has now been road tested (see picture of me above, in the green dress). I can honestly say that I totally forget that I am wearing it...now that is a big thing!

A lot of work has gone into to creating the Ultimate, to ensure that it puts in this kind of performance. In fact, it has taken two years and over 100 hours of testing to achieve the end product.

Sex and the City meets Gossip Girl: Cairo…

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you think about Cairo: veiled women and black attire, right? Well, the correct answer ladies and gents would be a definite NO.

Before I explain why, let me first start by giving you a brief history lesson. Cairo is the capital of Egypt, the country with one of the richest histories in the world. It started with the Phaoranic civilization, later occupied by the Romans, Greeks, Turks, French and last but not least the Brits.

This interesting mix of cultures that Egyptians have been exposed to has made the culture very rich and diverse: hence the Modern Egyptian. Now take that Modern Egyptian, and add in globalization, Satellite TV, social networking, internet sites, Egyptian Lifestyle English and Arabic Magazines, as well as international brands, clubs and pubs, parties and a killers beach scene. It is safe to say that the population has been totally “styled up”

Walking around the city, you will find women of all ages, all looking very fashionable, depending on what’s in that season. From skinny jeans and gladiator sandals, boots and scarves, bangles and head bands, heels and leggings, funky sunglasses to designer bags, it’s like watching an episode of Sex and the City meets Gossip Girl. That’s all besides the hair and makeup and the perfectly manicured nails with oh la la colors. It’s not all about the detail…it’s about what you can throw in to an outfit to try to stand out and personalize it. That gave more space to all the current Egyptian and Lebanese designers in the region who fuse the funky western look with a touch of authentic feel.

With the girls all dazzled up and looking like magazine material, the guys are also joining in the fun. With designer labels and accessories, a guy is expected to look like he made an effort putting an outfit together, rather than just throw anything on. Yes, Metrosexuality is totally and utterly in vogue. So with guys and women totally living it up, and having to meet at a lot of social events and obligations, people look like they are ready to pose for a magazine...because usually they are. Social magazines are present at every event and you’ll probably be featured in the next issue, so you better be ready to strike a pose and show us what you’ve got.

To sum it all up, it’s about what’s in, what’s hot…..with a touch of classic Art!

How did you get into the fashion world?
I am a firm believer that you are born with a certain style which you develop as you grow as it is all in your DNA and what you make of it. Getting into the world of fashion in my case started at an early age from when I was a child at home. I use to see my true and only role model, my mum getting ready for glamorous evenings, to go out with my father. Her sense of style has always fascinated me. She used to read magazines watch classical movies and get inspired by them. I used to see her design and sketch her own clothes and she would take me to the atelier where she use to stand on a stool and get fitted with tailors, seamstresses, pins, needles materials and fabric, which was fashion heaven to me, and the rest is history. I have always loved fashion, clothes and putting things together on myself, as well as family and friends. The shock factor was what I always had in the back of my head, which is why I always stood out whenever I got dressed, taking that extra risk and daring to stand out like a sore thumb. I have always been well travelled from a very early age and my curiosity always led me to see things that at the time were not in Dubai. Of course over the years the UAE has developed and Dubai has become a fashion capital in its own right and I have witnessed this growth and have been a strong part of it. Thanks to technology and the world of cyberspace, I have kept myself up to speed and got involved with it all. Today I see myself sitting front row at the world’s leading fashion houses like Marc Jacobs, Kenzo, Nina Ricci, and Chanel to name but a few, and it will not stop here.

How did house of glaMO come into being and what was the inspiration behind it?
As an artist myself, I have always loved the world of design, but I wanted to appear different, have more of a value and relevance with what I do and inspire as well as embrace my fans and friends, so that in the future, they can look back and remember me my work fondly. The house was developed overnight and I have to admit that it is because of luck and who I am as public figure that it exploded. Having said that I basically took something as easy and as simple as a t-shirt (which is basically reachable to everyone) and created my signature slogans using current and political media affairs and adding a sense of humour to it. It’s about messaging what people believe in, telling the truth, being a little controversial, funny and not hurting anyone. I started the concept last year in October, with a little story in the media that irritated me.

When you first launched the collection, what was the initial reaction?
I was taken aback at it all because I really did not intend for it to explode the way it did. With my first t-shirt I did not expect the reaction to even leave the UAE or Dubai itself. But it went global, and the media went into a frenzy. I remember the next morning, my email beeped every 3 mins and my phone was off the hook (it still is). I was so shocked. Obviously there were a few who wanted to get under my skin and try and get a reaction but I managed to keep my dialogue very diplomatic and sincere.

Your work has created an avenue for social dialogue and commentary – was this intentional?
It Absolutely is.

If you had to come up with a slogan for one of your t-shirts, for the new coalition government here in the UK, what would it be?
This is a funny one because I was just talking about it to a friend of mine a few days back and I was thinking that I would do something with the union jack and say "Vote Now, Vote Never, fancy some fish and chips?". It seems like these votes are not taken as seriously as they should be which is like having fish and chips…yummy, good yet not serious.

With the context of something as simple as the t-shirt and a statement, you have managed to successfully covey so many things – simplicity, relevance, fun. How have you managed to succeed at this, when so many other designers fail?
The t-shirt as you have said is the universal fashion statement. If you fail, try and try again until you find yourself. I do not believe in failure. I have to admit though that I did struggle because I did not expect the success. Man power was required, which is why I involved my best friend Tamara Al Gabbani who is a great ambassador for the brand and we both became partners in the house, with me making her the Managing Director. Two heads are always better than one and our partnership is so strong. We have a fantastic team/family working with us and it is very much a family. We consider the house to be a home for everyone who is involved with the brand, even our clientele. If you have the right team with you, and a great back bone to encourage you, you will never fail.

Do you have any plans to expand the brand beyond t-shirts?
At this stage the house is considering expansion in the future as any brand should and we have a number of surprises. However, in the meantime the t-shirt is our strength and we would like to maintain it. We are currently working on a number of collaborations. Artist and t-shirt designer guru Christopher Lee Sauve from New York will be designing a number of t-shirts with us which will be launched this Autumn. So please stayed tuned to see what we will be doing in the future.

What do you believe is the essence of true style?
It all depends on the person's lifestyle. I always think a great hair cut/style and shoes complete a person’s look. Achievement and what falls in the middle is the formula or equation based on the mood or occasion.

Who (other than house of glaMO) are your favourite designers?
Yves Saint Laurent is a true intellect and a great source of inspiration but since I love fashion so much, the list is endless. I love Hedi Slimane for being a great artist, Rad Hourani, Rick Owens, Karl Lagerfeld, Alber Albaz, Jeremy Scott, Elie Saab, Riccardo Tisci, the late Alexander Mc Queen and many others.

Finally, what advice would you give to anyone who wants to get into the fashion industry? I would advise everyone to always follow their dreams, instincts and heart. Never let anything get in your. Always remember that you really do achieve something at the end of each day.

What I believe street style is:

Well, Street style is all about send out a message about what you want to be linked with, expressing yourself with having to say anything and not being so formal. Being different but not being too outrageous.

What I think inspires street style:

For me a lot of street style is inspired by a trend or hype, music is a massive inspiration on street style. If something is mentioned and seen a lot in music videos or is linked to a hot artist then young people see this and want the same.

What I think Manchester street style is at present:

Being out and about in Manchester city centre every Saturday afternoon I see a lot of C.O.D (Colours On Dark) tops, dark jeans and flashy kicks. Bright prints on dark tops stand out a mile and people are drawn to them. I was wearing a male version of the “Quin” Council Royalty T-shirt and I noticed that people where trying their hardest to read my top and it sis get a load of attention. In Topman you see quite a few hoodies with neon buttons and they really stand out.

Men’s skinny jeans, I cannot stand them there is no need and look wrong! Skinny jeans should be for women and women only.

What I like at present:

Next’s O jeans they are great, they have the bowed “Gorilla” legs and fit and look smart but still casual, perfect for wearing high top kicks or pumps. Also, cuffed jeans River Island do a few pairs and they are just ace. Adidas slim series kicks, they are comfortable and not as bulky as previous Adidas hi/mid tops. Council Royalty T-shirts (Of Course) dare to be different and want a garment to be more than just a garment then Council Royalty Clothing is the one. As much as I adore all of the trends being tossed around these days inside most of the popular clothing stores, I can’t help but think that they all look a bit familiar. If you sift through the racks at your latest trendy store, you’ll see that clothing styles are returning to the ones that were invented decades earlier, from the cinched waists of the 1950’s to the padded shoulders of the 1980’s.

I’ve reached a conclusion that if styles are being recycled, we might as well be environmental and recycle the clothing, too. Which is why I’ve got every ounce of praise to sing for Lost and Found Clothing, a Seattle-based clothing business started up by an artistic couple, Emily and Yuuki. A graduate from design school, Emily has worked in the apparel industry for five years, designing for major brands, but decided she wanted to head in a more “grassroots” direction once she realized the environmental benefits lying within a vintage clothing business. Yuuki is a musician who has recorded and toured with the bands: Crystal Skulls, Dave Bazan, Sufjan Stevens and Richard Swift. Emily says, “Fashion is cyclical, and trend-driven retailers like Urban Outfitters are borrowing pretty directly from the past.” I couldn’t have said it any better.

Lost and Found Clothing aims to connect the people with the past, without creating the amount of waste seen in the fashion industry when new clothing is fabricated. When asked what kind of vintage finds Emily aims to add to the Lost and Found collection, she replied that every piece is based off of inspirations from various travels, films, and art exhibits. If you visit the website, you’ll notice how the front page has a blog filled with photographs and little quips from everywhere, a full log of inspiration. Emily says she’ll never put body-suits or sequins up for sale, but she’s definitely an advocate for floral dresses, sailor stripes, or lightweight blazers, which are all perfect for the oncoming summer season!

STYLISA talks to Fashion Designer Emma Box

We were lucky to get the chance to talk to Emma Box, an up and coming designer who is already dressing the stars.

Firstly Emma, tell us about the recent show, in which you showcased your collection? I showed my collection at UCA Rochester's internal show along with all the 3rd year collections. The purpose of the show was to select the students who would represent the university at River Islands Graduate Fashion Week. The judges included designers Bora Aksu and Emilio de la Morena it was a great honor to show in front of them as they are such well known and respected designers in the industry. The judges kept scores for each collection and the top 18 designers went through!

Were you nervous before the show?

YES!! Wow I was so nervous. We weren't allowed to go backstage and dress our models so it was all completely out of our hands. When you have worked so hard and care about something so much you only want it to go right. Being such a perfectionist didn't help either! Not only that but there is a huge amount of pressure on us, what with selection for graduate fashion week taking place and all of your friends and family being there to see your work. You can only hope that they like it and it lives up to their expectations!

Has the show led to any opportunities for you?

Well the main opportunity that it has led to is Graduate Fashion Week. I was selected to go through which was amazing. I remember going each year when I studied Fashion at college and I loved it so much, so I set that as my main goal and I worked hard to achieve it. Getting through was quite over whelming. There are over 60 of us in my year and only 18 places. I'm very lucky and grateful to have been given this opportunity. There were a lot of disappointed people, but you learn that that is how the industry is - it is very competitive.

Tell us about your latest collection and what inspired it?

My latest collection has been an wonderful experience...but stressful! However, I have loved it, as it's definitely the most satisfying and rewarding thing that I have done. I was actually inspired by an artist called Tillman Kaiser. I came across his work after he did an exhibition at the Wilkinson gallery, 'Hallucination Engine'. I just loved his work and felt it was so relevant for the times. I could relate to it completely, style wise and emotionally.

Where else do you draw inspiration from for your collections?

Everything really, music, art, culture. It is what's going on around you, and things that you wouldn't even think of, that influence your work subconsciously. It is important to stay on trend but move it that little bit forward so you have something different that still remains commercial and sellable.

Can you give us an idea of your fashion background?

Art and design has always been my main focus. I could work forever on something knowing that the result I would get at the end of it, would be worth it. I studied fashion and clothing design at national diploma level and left with a triple grade distinction. With that completed, I did some work experience at a company in India for a month, which gave me the confidence to go ahead and take it to degree level. I moved to Rochester away from my little village in Leicestershire and being close to london allowed me to do more work experience. During my first week I worked at London Fashion Week which was a whole new world and completely different to what I was ever used to...I LOVED it. I have worked at every fashion week since dressing for shows including, Jean-Pierre Braganza and Ziad Ghanem. I have assisted on various shoots for PUMA, Diesel and the singer, Little Boots. I interned at Tatty Devine as I have an interest in accessories too and for the past 18 months I have assisted Emma Bell who has become my main mentor!

Are you working on anything at the moment?

At the moment I'm working on the collection still, doing shoots and portfolio work towards my degree, but I am taking part in an exhibition curated by designer Emma Bell in Vienna in June! The exhibition also includes work from Charlie Le Mindu, Louise Gray, Scott Ramsay Kyle and Nicholas Kirkwood (showcasing work by British designers). This is a very exciting event to be a part of, especially being a new graduate designer. I will be placed in the new designer showcase section and get to fly over two days after my show at graduate fashion week. So very exciting times ahead, which I'm very grateful for.

Have your designs been worn by any celebrities?

I literally just found out today that my outfit was featured in the Mirror on Sundays Style magazine, and worn by Rachel Stevens (see picture above). I never would have known if an old friend hadn't left me a message on my Facebook wall to say she thinks she saw my stuff in a magazine. Quick google and it all came up! That definitely brought a smile to my face, in fact I'm not sure who was more excited...me or my Dad!

What is your interpretation of style?

I think true style is when someone can express themselves through their clothing and dressing to suit their personality, shape and lifestyle while remaining individual and comfortable. Comfort is key. If you don't feel good in what you are wearing, then you are not going to look good.

Do you think it is easier or harder for new designers to break into the industry?

I think now there are so many organisations and charities put into place to help new, young designers. The British Fashion Council has a lot to offer, what with Graduate Fashion Week of course, New Gen, Elle Talent Launch Pad and Fashion Forward, to name a few. There are many opportunities to apply for. The internet now is also a great platform to use for networking and promoting yourself. However in terms of income I think its very difficult to have a successful business with good profit and sales. It is important to have a good balance between creativity and commerce to sell, but to gain press exposure usually requires something quite extreme to get the attention. However, if it is not wearable, then it is not going to sell. So it's a case of finding the right balance, making clothes that people are going to want to buy but without compromising your creativity and expression as a designer.

Do you have any tips for others trying to get into the fashion industry?

It takes hard work and total dedication and in such a competitive industry, you have to be the best you can be. There is always room for improvement so how much work you put into it will determine how much you get back out of it. Do as much work experience as you can, and be positive and enthusiastic. You may not always enjoy the jobs you are given but once you prove yourself it will pay off and other doors will open. There is always more to learn so never think you know it all. Keep at it and don't be disheartened if you don't achieve the praise you wanted...just push it further untill you do!

STYLISA chats to John Wind, Maximal Art Jewellery

We were lucky enuogh to interview John Wind who is the designer and artist behind the Maximal Art Jewellery brand. John's career spans over 20 years, and was lucky enough to be photogrpahed by Andy Warhol. John's work has been featured in Vogue, In Style and O, the Oprah Magazine, and numerous other publications.

Firstly, tell us how you came to be a designer?

A life-long passion for the visual arts led me to art school. I won a scholarship to study in London at the Slade School of Art in the early 80’s. The fashion and music scenes were electrifying, and I started making some jewelry for me and my friends as a hobby. It took off and before I knew it I had become a jewelry designer!

Where do you draw your inspirations from?

The past. I love ‘Vintage’ of all ages, from Victorian to the 70’s. That’s the starting point, and then the fun part is finding a modern balance and conterpoint to the old, so it’s cool and ‘gotta have it’.

What has been the highlight of your career to date?

This year Maximal Art celebrates its 25th Anniversary. Working with Robbin Cook, the company president, for all these years, growing a brand, employing so many people, making thousands of customers happy, and doing something creative every day is the cumulative highlight.

What is average day like for you?

If I’m at the office, then the mornings are usually administrative—meetings, emails, etc. Then after lunch I put on my designer hat. I also travel a lot—for trunkshows at our best accounts, for wholesale tradeshows, and for buying parts both old and new at factories and flea markets around the US and in Europe.

Do you have a favourite piece amongst your collections?

The 4-face watch bracelet we did in the 80’s is what ‘put us on the map’. I still think it is stylish, fun, wearable, and unique.

Is there a particular person that you have always wanted to create a piece of jewellery for (like a celebrity)?

I’d love to make Michelle Obama a necklace...

Having read the about page on your website, you seem to connect with your customer on a very personal level – is this intentional?

Before art school I wanted to be a novelist, and I think that our jewelry is very narrative. It tells a story, it’s personal, it is uplifting, it starts conversations. So the personal connection with customers is a natural outcome of that. Also, Robbin and I both encourage a real, friendly, fun interaction between the company and the customers. It’s part of our philosophy.

What are your views and interpretation on style?

Style is different than Fashion. It’s more about personal style, and while it can be inspired by trends and newness, it’s more consistent. ‘John’s Gal’s’ are our friends and customers who really get that, whether their style is to layer 6 necklaces at a time or to just wear stud earrings and a chunky initial bracelet.

Finally, what advice would you give to anyone who wants to become a designer?

Make stuff, show it around, wear it yourself, go to stores, check out tradeshows... And more than anything, be creative and original. There’s so much out there already. It takes a unique point of view to excite buyers and customers and to cut through the clutter.

The dress that was designed and created for Lisa's EMBF award nomination in 2008. This style of dress is currently being worn b the fabulous Carrie Bradshaw in the latest Sex and the City 2 movie.

JStreet was also the designer of choice when Lisa met with Harrods Fashion and Beauty Director Marigay McKee who was impressed with the piece from JStreets latest collection.

The fabulous Brix Smith-Start

Firstly, aside from being extremely busy, how are you doing?
Well, physically, I'm tired - just like a battery that's lost a bit of it's charge. Mentally I've never been happier or more positive, and I'm enjoying every minute of life. There was a long time when I didn't work and now all I do is work; but you have to make hay while the sun shines and I'm grateful for every opportunity.

How did you get into the world of fashion?
I've been interested in fashion ever since I was a small child. My mother encouraged me to pick out my own clothes and be as creative as I liked, even if they clashed it didn't matter. She taught me that fashion was a form of self expression. But 10 years ago after a long career in the music business, my husband and I moved from Notting Hill to Shoreditch and I woke up one morning and turned to Philip and said, 'honey, there's nowhere to shop', and he said to me 'why dont we start a little boutique on a back street and fill it with things we love?'. It really was a case of necessity is the mother of invention. My husband has an extensive retail background having founded and run Woodhouse menswear for 35 years, so I wasn't exactly dealing with an amateur. He let me do the womenswear buying; he gave me encouragement, a free reign and a budget, and the rest is history.

What is a typical day like within the world of Brix?
Wake up at 6 and feed the dogs. Make a cup of coffee with vanilla soy milk. Go back to sleep for half an hour after the coffee. Watch E! news at 8 o'clock. Do a few emails on my iPhone. Run for half an hour with the dogs. Shower. Dress. And either one of two things: go downstairs get to a waiting car and go off to film all day, or if it's a shop day walk to Start (which is a 15 minute walk from my house) and spend my time on the shop floor/ in the office doing interviews, pr and buying. When it's buying season my day is totally different, it is spent going to back to back buying appointments - sometimes 6 a day - either in London or Paris. I do New York over the internet with pictures, and I don't go to Milan any more. I spend on average about 3 days a week filming and 2 days in the shop, except Saturday is a completely different animal. On Saturday I work in the shop all day and people make appointments with me for me to style them, which are free and they just book my time - I either do jeans fittings or style them depending on what they want. Every evening I go home, have a glass of wine, water the roof terrace, cook dinner or go out to dinner/a function, four days a week I'm out. If I'm home I go to bed by 10 and read a book every night. Inbetween times I always tweet as well, I tweet all day long.

You also appear on TV alongside the fabulous Gok Wan - can you give any hints on what will feature in the new show?
Aside from the catwalk face-off and makeovers, I will be doing my own strand called 'Best of British' which will take a look at iconic British brands and British manufacturing and look at the skills of true craftsmen and artisans of which this country can be proud.

What do you enjoy most about being in fashion?
I love discovering new brands and new designers, especially young talent. And I love dressing people and making them feel fabulous.

How would you describe your look?
My look changes from day to day and is pretty much an expression of my personality.

Do you have a favourite designer?
My favourite designer is Martin Margiela, followed by Rick Owens, followed by Acne and Alexander Wang. Those are the designers that I wear the most, but I truly love Erdem.

And what about the high street - do you have any favourite shops?
My favourite high street shop is Zara but I never shop on the high street.

As we are already into the Spring/Summer fashions, what tips can you give us for Autumn/Winter?
It's time to cuddle up. There were so many cuddly mohair and shearling gilets around, everything is soft and delicious. Khaki and camel. All-over prints, for instance tunic dresses and matching leggings in bold graphic geometric prints, or a touch of the animal.

What advice would you give to those wanting to get into the fashion industry?
I recommend that people take internships so that they find out if a certain type of job in the industry suits them i.e. buying, pr, merchandising, window display etc. We always have interns and some of my favourite members of staff have come from internships.

Love Handbags…Love Lulu…

Me, Lulu, & the lovely Sian Astley

It was certainly what was known in the Twitter world as a ‘Fashionable Friday’ in Manchester yesterday. Leaving the sunshine and entering the luxury paradise that is Poshu, we were immediately greeted by an array of the most fabulous handbags.

And what was even better was that the fabulous lady behind these glorious bags was also in attendance…Lulu Guinness OBE (in an equally fab dress, which I shall be going out to find today). The brand was launched in 1989 and became instantly successful. A Lulu Guinness bag is a statement, not only of style, but of individuality. They are quirky, fun and full of personality – and what makes them even more special is that you can see Lulu in each piece, which is a feat that is rarely achieved by many designers.

Personally, I have always been a huge fan of Lulu Guinness. Like me, Lulu has no formal ‘fashion’ training but possesses a real passion for fashion, which is clearly evident in her collections. It was great to meet Lulu and have a brief chat with her – she was delightful and guessed that I was a fashion blogger…I was one very chuffed fashionista.

Last year, Lulu was awarded The Independent Handbag Designer Awards ICONOLAST Award for Lifetime Achievement in Handbag Design.

If you love handbags, then you’re gonna love Lulu…

Firstly, tell us about yourselves and what you do within Red Rover Style?

We are Rachael and Elena, two sisters of three. Rachael is older by just two years. We’ve grown up with similar experiences, but we are very different when it comes to our talents and passions. But our one common thread is people and charity work. We were overjoyed at the opportunity to co-found RedRoverStyle.com, a fashion / lifestyle online magazine connecting the world through every day lifestyle needs, while making a bridge to charity work.

Elena is the Marketing Director and Charity Coordinator, and Rachael is the Web Designer, in addition to the Style and Creative Director. We also show up at events and represent the brand while engaging with young individuals who are using their lifestyle to help a charity. We are dedicated to our team of columnists by keeping them updated on upcoming events they too can be a part of.

How did Red Rover Style begin?
Our journey with Red Rover Style began with the launch of Red Rover Services, an Online PR and Webinar Event Planning Company specializing in helping small businesses boost their sales by building them an online profile.

We launched Red Rover Style because of our passion for faith, fashion, true beauty, arts, culture, music, and literature. We wanted to share tips and experiences to help men and women all over the world. So, we turned our girly dream into RedRoverStyle.com.

We decided to celebrate this dream with some of our most beautiful friends, who are not only stylish and glamorous on the outside, but their hearts are genuine and golden. Our friends are now the featured Red Rover Style Columnists. They are women of grace, style, and vision who inspire many and are committed to excellence.

Red Rover Style is purposed to give lifestyle tips while connecting individuals to charities they love. The most important part of a joyful lifestyle is to surround oneself with good people – people who will make your heart sing.

We are excited for the 2010 launch of Red Rover Style, and we are very eager to see where it goes. We encourage everyone and anyone to join us, connect with us, and of course, stylize alongside us.

What exactly does RRS seek to achieve?

Red Rover Style is a resource for those who desire to change the world. By showcasing individuals that have devoted their everyday lifestyles to charity with the purpose of achieving excellence, we desire to enable our readers to pursue similar lifestyles. Of course, we believe in having fun and enjoying life along the way with our Red Rover Style Columnists’ blogs.

We hope to become the go-to source for all lifestyle needs, while globally connecting individuals to charities they can support. We hope to improve the world by featuring true leaders, who are dedicated to creating good opportunity for others.

How did you go about pulling the whole website and contributors together?

First, we put some feelers out there with our closest friends. They shared their insight and from there, we put together our vision outlining the mission, purpose, the 5 Ws, and a tid-bit as to why we were committed to Red Rover Style.

As for the website, that was an ongoing project for about a month gathering material and outlining the layout for the site. We took 2 full days and built the site with the wonderful, Mr. Jon Lechliter. We then reached out to some website headshots like MakeoverMomma.com, CheapChicas.com, and jKelly.org. Our connections were made by saying how much we loved their sites, would they be willing to share their point of view on ours? Last, but not least, STYLISA – our looking glass into our favorite fashion, UK style.

What is an average day like in the RRS headquarters?

Brainstorming new ideas, gathering posts from our 20+ columnists, reaching out to charity event coordinators, answering numerous e-mails a day, social media marketing, taking a phone call with women who want to learn about how they can do what we do or enter the fashion industry, e-mailing our team about events, ideas, and more. Engaging with different charities and planning for our first upcoming event happening on June 8 in NYC. We have daily founder meetings that last from 10 minutes to 5 hours. Brainstorming company culture…and of course, updating the site for a few hours a day.

How has RRS been received in the 'social media community', in terms of feedback?

We see the growth in terms of facebook fans, twitter followers, and visits to the site. The most important factor is visitor loyalty to us, which is at about 50%. That is huge to us. We received e-mails with feedback, which is the hottest thing to us – why? Because that shows us people care. Caring is hott! It is there way of giving to us, and we truly appreciate it. We love to see comments on the columns, facebook, and our twitter. We’ve developed a top-10 circle, where our social media friends are retweeting our messages. That’s awesome!

What are your views and interpretation on style?

We’re all about the right look for the right body type. We struggle with wanting to be thinner because it looks good in the mags and being in NYC on the billboards, but we know what looks good on us and are dedicated to finding that style niche for our body type. In terms of visual appeal, we like the pretty things in life with a flair or artistic color, print, layers, and of course – shape. We don’t have to flow with the trends, as we want to create the trends with our personal touch. Like a lot of other women, we love to pair an expensive piece with a budget conscious piece, but we have a habit of bragging about our prudent prices because we want our friends and random strangers be able to take part in the action.

What is the take on British style in the states?

Personally, we think British style is super hott. Elena spent a year in England, and she brought home a style that Rachael desired, and so started her clothes from topshop, vintage stores, and even thrift stores we borrowed often. When topshop hit NYC, it was unstoppable. For us, it is preferred. British style is an identity, and we just want to have some parts of that identity in our wardrobe.

Finally, do you have any plans to develop the RRS Brand?

Absolutely. Right now, everything being developed has to stay in budget. In terms of growth, we have some ideas underway to establish consistency in what we feature week-to-week, like CheapChica Wednesdays, Social Media Tuesdays with Socialinsta, and UK Fashion bi-weekly. Beyond that, we’re looking for Red Rover Style talent. Young women / men who feature lifestyle and charity in their hometowns and report on it using pictures and video. Lastly, we, the Red Rover Sisters, will have a continual video blog of what we’re doing to help build our girly dream into a beautiful reality.

STYLISA were lucky enough to have a quick chat with the gorgeous Simon Webbe, during rehersals for his debut in the musical Sister Act...

Firstly, how have you been?

I'm healthy and happy!

A little birdie tells us you are appearing in a new show. Can you tell us more about it please?I am doing the famous Sister Act Musical at the London Palladium and I am so nervous as it's something I never thought I would do but when I was asked to audition I thought, why not give it a go.

Aside from the show, are you working on any new material?I have been in the states working on my song writing and I am putting together a new album myself in the next three months.

When can we expect to hear this new material?With Blue getting back together, I am waiting to see the outcome so I have my album as my back up plan, so hopefully by the end of this year...fingers crossed.

You are a big supporter of up and coming talent – is there anyone out there that excites you at the moment?
Listen out for one of Manchester's finest Tyler D and hip hop Artist Lyrican also a rock band The Filthy Souls.

How important to you is it to inspire and encourage young and new talent?I think if your in a position to help and you can, then you should.

Here at STYLISA, we believe that style is a state of mind. What is your personal take on style?Style to me is self expression.

When it comes to fashion, do you have any favourite designers or high street brands?I love high street stores. Top Man, River Island and AllSaints are some of my favourites and D&G of course...

Finally, what advice would you give to anyone who wants to get into the world of show business?Work hard, believe in yourself and always have a back up plan...x

It's the Happy Hipster here, letting you all know that I've up and left New York City and flown back home to sunny California for the summer holidays! Sometimes it's good to get out of the city for a while and change up the scenery for a bit.

The only trouble is, a change of scenery just might require a change of wardrobe. For instance, I woke up this morning and unzipped my suitcase to start unpacking. For each piece that I pulled out, the same words kept popping up in my head: "This is way too New York." How the heck can I pull off wearing all this black and city-slicker styled clothing over here on the West Coast? No way could I pull off throwing on my Soho platforms for a run around town like I can through the streets of NYC.

So a solution came along in the form of one of my favorite brands: RVCA. Famous model, Erin Wasson, has teamed up with the Californian brand yet again for another season of fantastic clothing that melds together the urban chic of NYC with the kick-back style of Southern California. As a gal who spends most of her year in the City and the rest of it on the coasts of California, there's really no better option.

She wow'd us last season with her black silk blouses, skintight velvet leggings, sheer thigh-highs, and denim cutoffs, perfect for the winter night-child effect. For the Spring 2010 season, however, she's gone for a lighter, airier look with nudes and light bronzes and white cutoffs instead of blue or black. She still brought the rocker touch to the clothing with a few polished studs here and there. A reference to Neil Young emblazoned on a white tunic tee says, "Keep it Neil," a clever and quirky way to bring a laid back feel to the clothing. Erin wanted to tie both ends of the country together through this line, giving NYC uniform a SoCal tinge. Well, she's sure done the trick and I'm definitely game.

Hey Susie,

Thanks so much for taking the time out of your fashion blog to speak to us…

Firstly, tell us what inspired you to start your fashion blog?

I wish there was some sort of motivating 'inspiration' story. There isn't. I really was just bored one day at my job in digital advertising (this was four years ago...) and decided to set up a blog in my lunch hour. I was reading a handful of blogs at the time (though there weren't as many as there are now!) but I really just wanted a hobby to occupy my time and something to channel my love of fashion into.

How do you feel about the amazing response that your blog has had?

It's not something I think about and to be honest, my blog's progress has been a gradual one... it's not some overnight success so I've just been taking things in one step at a time...

What have been some of the highlights for you, in relation to the success of your blog?

So many... getting shot by Elle for their Closet Confidential feature, getting photographed by Nick Knight for i-D, travelling to places and experiencing fashion on a heightened level... and above all, meeting friends through these blogging excursions that have gone on to become some of my closest friends.

Describe a typical day in the blogging world of Susie Bubble?

It depends.... at the moment, I'm travelling a lot and there are also press days for A/W 10-11 going on so one day, I could be out and about, running errands, seeing designers, seeing PRs, doing research or sat at home staring at my iMac screen all day long.

How do you think the world of fashion blogging will evolve in the next five years?

I think it will just become a established fashion medium and other bloggers will obviously rise to the top....

How would you define your own style?

Eclectic. Experimental. Full of contrasts.

Who are your style icons?

I don't actually have one!

What three items in yur wardrobe could you not live without?

A vintage NY Mets t-shirts - it's a comfort thing! My Luxirarare 'booby' jacket and American Apparel grey jersey vests - key to wearing sheer things over on top.

Finally, what are your favourite key looks for Spring/Summer 2010?

Anything pastel, floaty, sheer and full of embroidery!

Florence and Fred Couture - Extreme Denim Jacket

The first word that pops into our minds with this jacket is ‘detail’. The detailing captured in this jacket is beautiful, almost artisitic, with it’s origami pleats and pintucks. Denim is a big trend this season and this jacket is the perfect way to introduce some denim into your wardrobe, if you don’t have some in there already. Again this is something that would not look out of place on Lady Gaga, so we very much expect to see her popping into her nearest Tesco the next time she is in the UK. This jacket is also very versatile in so far as you could wear it with a pencil skirt, leggings, fitted trousers, shorts…the list goes on. And the deep-v at the back of the jacket, makes it even edgier. The jacket needs very few (if any) accessories because of its opulent design and the absolute best thing about this gorgeous creation is the price…£75! Three words…Credit Crunch Couture.
